Artist about the work: This work, ‘Emmaus-Ölberg Kirche IV’, is part of a larger series of images examining our relationship to history through religious buildings in Berlin. As I investigate the way in which history is etched into the buildings of Berlin, I am also engaging the status of Europe today. I left London for Berlin in an attempt to better understand Europe’s political climate. Grappling with religious architecture, in particular, the work draws connections between three Berlins. First, it alludes to the history of Berlin; a place of tragic persecution of religious and ethnic minorities, in which many physical landmarks, such as churches, acted as symbols of that oppression. Second, the present-day Berlin, whose identity is secure as an inclusive space for near unparalleled tolerance, where buildings such as mosques or synagogues fulfil new roles as symbols of liberalism and multiculturalism. Finally, it speaks to the uncertain future of Berlin as a symbol for Europe, dogged by the threat of resurgent nationalism, and the sectarian conflicts that these buildings might be twisted to represent, yet again.

I just love the opportunity of buying art by artists that I would have never met without Artpiq. I live in Munich and now own a piece of art by a London based artist that just graduated. How cool is that?
