About

Clara Dias (b.1984, Portugal; lives and works in London) has recently graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Arts Painting from Wimbledon College of Arts - UAL (2017) and has also received a BSc Nursing from Escola Superior de Bissaya Barreto in Portugal (2006). Her practice alludes to the laceration of the human body and the nature of repairing and healing, through a very physical way of experimentation. Her work opens up spaces to think about her own relationship with skin and surface, as a symbolic border that separates and connect us. By embodying the materials’ surfaces, skin can be acknowledged within its folds, creases, tension and movement, while collapsing and constraining to reveal skins and bodies in themselves.

She has exhibited widely in London and has contributed to Amy McDonnell's and Marsha Bradfield's project "What Happens to Us" (2016) and Emma Cousin's solo exhibition "Leg Up" (2017). She has also undertaken residencies in London and Spain - Joya Air. She has been an artist assistant for both emerging and established contemporary artists in their national and international shows and commissions, such as Simon Callery (Annex 14, Zurich - Open Body (2017); Fold Gallery - Yellow (2017); DOLPH Projects, Streatham Paintings, London (2016); other exhibitions in Brussels, Rome and Copenhagen), Harold Offeh (London Art Fair 2016) and Monica Alcazar Duarte (MiAL London 2016). Since the end of 2016, she has undertaken volunteer roles in leading contemporary and educational galleries in London, namely House of Illustration, Peckham Platform, October Gallery and Eastside Educational Trust. Here she was engaged with their educational projects and assisting artists in delivering children and young adults workshops, talks and other events accompanying each exhibition.

Awards: SPACE Patrons & Friends Studio Bursary (SPACE, 2017) and Prunella Clough Painting Scholarship (Wimbledon College of Art, 2016).

I think I have always been a creative person, I just didn't know that being an artist could be a career path. After feeling unfulfilled in my previous healthcare job, I decided to change career and use the portfolio from my painting course in Lisbon (Portugal) to apply to Wimbledon College of Art (UK). During these three years I saw my creative practice being taken forward and validated through awards. I had the opportunity to work with emerging and established artists and thus build a strong creative network. This has given me the strength to keep going, keep making work, keep being perseverant and ambitious to become successful in my career as an artist.
