I'm currently based in South London. I am a visual artist and most of my work usually takes its form in videos. But I love to paint as a form of therapy.
I don't think there was this specific moment, where I was like "I'm going try doing this today." I think I've always inherently known that I was going to follow an artistic path of some sort. I've always thought deeply and interpreted that in creative way, whether it was a poem, a photo, a little drawing, a video - whatever I could / can get my hands on at the time - a kind of subconscious, instinctive response to what was going on in my mind. At high school, I struggled massively in deciding on what I wanted to achieve, what I wanted to share with the rest of the world. There was a lot of pressure to go to university and tick all these boxes by the time you were 21 and all I could remember thinking was that I just wanted to continue creating, sharing experiences and exploring what was out there. So, at around 16 I dropped out and studied textiles at a local college. It was here where I started to practice the technical process of creating. After 2 years, the course was over and I still had no real idea of what I wanted to do (as do most 18 year olds, I'm sure). I decided to to move as far away from the pressure of deciding a future, as I physically could and ended up in Sydney, Australia. It was here where I had complete freedom to breathe. I spent a lot of time alone, exploring and recording the emotional and physical space around me. And although I did feel sad when my time there came to an end, I also felt ready to go after whatever it was that I wanted. I always look back on my time there very fondly. I arrived back in the U.K. with a little more confidence but even less money. I took up work in an office which slowly killed me, I think maybe the last time that I walked out of there could have been the deciding moment I became an Artist. I finally could see that following a creative path wasn't a risk but it was an investment. At 21, I got an offer from University of the Arts London studying Set Design for Screen. I built on my confidence, learnt a ridiculous amount and had the opportunity to collaborate with some incredibly talented artists. Now, I have drive and ability to put any idea I may have into practice and produce work that I am privileged to share.
