Austin Moule

I currently live in Minneapolis, MN and received my MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2017. I grew up a few minutes from the ocean. Surfing was my favorite pastime from the age of 9 until I moved to the Midwest for graduate school at the age of 24. I have a strong affinity for the ocean and feel that it has in some way affected who I have become, or perhaps the way I view things. I think it forces you to be present.

I am not sure exactly and when or if I really decided to become an artist. I have always liked to make and design things. I always made drawings and painted my surfboards, as well as my friends' boards, and was often in charge of any drawing/designing that needed to be done amongst my peers, like for logos and stuff like that. Not knowing what I wanted to do when I went to school, I started pursuing a business degree but that wasn't working out for me. I thought about graphic design, but I hated working digitally. Graphic design did, however, require that I take an introductory drawing class, which I did enjoy. From there I took more classes, got very involved in printmaking and was also doing sculptural/collage work at home and making lots of drawings. Before I knew it, I was in graduate school with a real studio and some paints.
