Fast painting leaves a lot open, I fix the image by picking easy recognizable scenes. I want the images to have metaphorical potential but at the same time I want them to be extremely simple.
The astonishing thing is: when it works to bring something that is different together. Chaos and order, rules and anarchy, seriousness and irony, complexity and casualness. Most often the images are based on images that are already abstracted. If I see an image that is simply put together well and alluring to a theme that could have meaning, I use it as a template. It is really liberating when most of the formal questions are answered by the circumstances. A minimum amount of composition and colour rules I want to play by, but it shouldn't be all about their sophistication.
Surely, the following rules are highly simplified but:
- a tree is green
- something round with a wavy border is easily recognized as a cloud
- dark image elements seem heavier than bright ones
- crowded elements convey tightness
- contrast makes it easier for the viewer to recognize something
- warmth is emotional
This rules are so easy that it has to be clear that it's not about observing them. It's about making something incredibly complicated, simple.
