Artist about the work: The border crossing at Sunauli, between India and Nepal, is the focus of these lino prints. The works are part off a wider series examining small mountain communities caught in the wider nets of social and political upheaval. The aggressions of India and Pakistan, and the desperate plea for peace by the Kashmiri people are apparent throughout Northern India, while the Chinese denial of Tibetan statehood casts a long shadow over much of Himachal Pradesh and Nepal. Each place, too, exists under the growing shadow of environmental catastrophe. My works try to make sense of these conflicting forces, acknowledging the near-miraculous ability for each local community to continue as normal, as though nothing threatens their way of life. The lino prints render dense, surreal, liminal landscapes in reduced black and white forms. Each image reflects our efforts as viewers to try and understand new cultural contexts – our efforts to try and recall our original experiences, even as the memories begin to fade and distort.
