Yambe Tam is a transdisciplinary artist based in London. She grew up in the American Midwest and earned her BFA in Painting and Art History from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012, and her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2018.
Tam has exhibited across the USA, UK, and Europe. She has been an artist in residence with Sail Britain (Scotland), the Institut für Alles Mögliche (Berlin), Can Serrat (Barcelona), and the New York Studio Programme. In January 2019, she will be a resident artist at the Muse Gallery, London to focus on an upcoming project combining sculpture, installation, music, and dance.
Her creative practice looks at the evolution of consciousness through the lenses of cognitive science, theoretical physics, Zen Buddhism, and Jungian psychology. This takes form in paintings and sculptures that piece together the sense of struggle, growth, and surrender to the unknown through imagery of the cosmos, plants, gates, gardens, labyrinths, nets, holes (black holes, wormholes, keyholes), the void, and the human body. Her process involves a combination of digital and traditional techniques that combine ancient and contemporary aesthetics. This is part of a larger visual vocabulary that traverses the sacred and profane by merging religion and science, spiritual and physical experience.
