About
Artist of figurative painting and printmaking.
Tobia König graduated in Social Sciences at Sciences Po Paris before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig with Prof. Heribert C. Ottersbach, Prof. Tilo Baumgärtel and Prof. Christoph Ruckhäberle.
In 2014 she started experimenting with risograph prints as an artistic medium. Consciously bypassing the mass media implicature of the medium itself, she has since developed a number of series carefully limiting each motive to a small run of prints. „The Fair Sex“ (2017/18) is the largest series so far with more then forty different motives.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Grappling with gendered hierarchies in society deeply affects my work. By questioning contradictions between the image of the free artistic genius and the actual opportunities that are bound to race, gender and class my work explores ways of breaking with preconceived ideas surrounding gender and sexuality.
Over time, the concept of hegemonic masculinity became a vital source of inspiration to me and my work increasingly included images of men. The concept provided a theoretical framework for my urge to produce images of male tenderness and bodies that don’t need a female or homoerotic counterpart to display a sexual drive.
