Artist Info:
Shipei Wang is a UK-based artist, currently working and living between Glasgow and Edinburgh . Wang’s multicultural upbringing – having grown up in China, Canada, Germany, Sweden, South Korea and the UK – informs her work and research, which often delve into feelings of anxiety, fear and loneliness that expose the fragility of organic bodies in physical and cultural displacement . She specializes in painting with acrylic on stretched silk, a method derived from traditional Tibetan thangka paintings, which gives her works a luminous, illustrative quality . In her eerie yet humorous imagery, moments of unease are conveyed with a childlike light-heartedness, and her paintings are intrinsically rooted in issues of cultural amnesia and lost identities . Wang has received multiple accolades (including several Royal Scottish Academy awards) and internationally exhibited her art, marking her as one of Scotland’s promising young artists.
