Gala Bell
Based London, UK
Gala Bell is a London based artist. The alchemy of matter is at the centre of her practice, moving between painting and installation.
Graduate of the Royal College of Art, she has been selected for exhibitions with The London Design Festival, The Design Museum, The Korean Cultural Institute Berlin, Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz Berlin and Galerie der HBKsaar in Saarsbrucken. Bell has had commissions by BBC One and Tate and Lyle for her sugar sculptures, with a piece acquired by the Tate and Lyle archive in London.
She has been included in publications with Sotheby’s Made in Bed Magazine, Frieze Magazine, BBC One and The Talk at Ten panel discussion. She was shortlisted for the Ashurst Art Prize 2021, and has been selected for Saatchi’s ‘Rising Stars 2022’ with a special feature for Saatchi’s ‘One to Watch.’ She was an artist inn residence at Buckinghamshire New University and Villa Lena Art Foundation 2023.
Inspired by the prismatic nature of modern living, her work engages with ideas of value, taste, hierarchy and absurd labour. The work is the aftermath of a reaction to substance and situation, moving between traditional painting and contemporary installation where materials and actions become metonymic, swapping roles between building methods or kitchen techniques, exploring the possibilities of our encounter with art objects.
