Bislacchi
Based London, UKThe exploration of the confines of the painted canvas support is at the core of my practice. I am interested in painting as a medium that renovates its visual language through the notion of three dimensionality where the work addresses issues of space, form and colour. I adopt wooden surfaces as purely functional structures creating insertions of painting supports upon which I apply pieces of scrunched or twisted canvas. Consequently, canvas acts as a means to create the work rather than just being a pictorial support, re-confronting space within the boundaries of painting.
By scrunching, stretching and twisting several pieces of canvas in elaborated forms, the work achieves geometric voluptuousness prescribing a degree of interplay with the viewer, who is invited to observe the behaviour of the fabric and to experience the application of colour in relation to form. The alteration of the canvas’s surface, open to 3D experimentations, questions long-established painting processes highlighting a coexistence between its traditional stretching purpose and a more
unconventional approach that is key in comprehending the relationship between the historical painting heritage and a new contemporary language.
